Tips to Not Living from Paycheck to Paycheck After the Divorce

18 September, 2008 (00:00) | By: danitaylorl

Many people in America live from paycheck to paycheck. In fact, in August of 2003, an estimated 3.5 million people would have been homeless if they were to lose just one paycheck. This is a scary situation and if you’re in this situation, it’s important to do something about it before tragedy occurs.

Experts suggest having a savings account that contains (at the very least) an entire month of bill money. This is so that you can have a bit of cushion in case of the loss of a job or something similar. Here are some important tips to not living paycheck to paycheck.

Stop Unnecessary Spending -

No one wants to feel deprived. If you work an entire week, you should expect to be able to spend some money on the things you enjoy. However, most people spend way too much money on unnecessary items. Figure up the amount of money you spend unnecessarily and then take 25% of that to use as your ‘play’ money. Place the rest in a high interest savings account or a CD so that it will make money for you. This will help you save up some extra money so that you will not have to live paycheck to paycheck.

What Could You Do to Save Money?

Another important thing you can do is determine what techniques you could use to save more money. For instance, perhaps you’re paying on a vehicle. Could you purchase a cheaper, used vehicle that you would own outright rather than having a monthly note on a vehicle? This would save money and allow you to stockpile even more cash. You can also do simple things which would help save money - like eating leftovers rather than throwing them away, or purchasing off-brand foods at the grocery store. There is an entire list of things that can help save money. Start thinking creatively!

Think like an Entrepreneur -

Another thing you can do in order to build up your savings account is to think like an entrepreneur. For instance, if your kids outgrow their clothing and it’s still in good shape - put it on eBay and sell it! This won’t make you a ton of money, but every few dollars saved is closer to becoming wealthier. If you’re doing spring cleaning and you find a ton of items that are still functioning but unwanted, have a garage sell. There are many things you can do to make extra money, just from the stuff you don’t want!

Living paycheck to paycheck is not fun, and by following these tips, you can slowly pull yourself out of the hole. Wealthy individuals are actually pretty frugal with their money, they make investments in things that will gain value with time and they become even wealthier. So, think like your rich and follow these tips to stop living paycheck to paycheck.
