Berlin A Marvel Of German Engineering

12 October, 2008 (00:00) | By: amayco

The citizens are friendly, the beer is fantastic and the food is something that you have to try over and over again.

Berlin is where the old meets the new. Just a few decades ago, the city of Berlin was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. At the fall of the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall came down and this opened up the world to a part of Berlin that was not seen by many before.

On first sight, you will notice that there are two very distinct parts to Berlin. The vast majority of old East Berlin is made up of what one would call stock architecture. This refers to the concrete blocks of apartments and Russian-influenced public buildings. On the other side of the spectrum, old West Berlin is made up of modern buildings, skyscrapers and works of architectural art. Although the bridge is changing with a lot of construction going on in the eastern side of Berlin, the differences are still quite apparent. These differences are what make the city of Berlin very special.

Never before has it been this easy to book a holiday to Berlin. There are many online websites that allow you to view maps of the areas, visit the hotels virtually and check out pictures of self-catering holiday apartments. The opportunities are endless and all you need is access to the Internet and a few minutes to spare.

It all depends on what exactly you are looking for in a holiday. Berlin offers much in terms of everything. The youth culture in the city is very big and here you will find some of the most interesting clubs and pubs. Although many of these places have a western slant to them, they still maintain a strong sense of German pride and identity and the youth is emerging as the real future of German culture.

On the other side of the coin, Berlin also offers you a lot in terms of culture and heritage. Berlin has some of the most incredible ballet houses and opera theatres on the planet and this does not just refer to the architecture. If you book early enough, you should be able to get good seats to see one of the shows on offer. Furthermore, the earlier you book, the cheaper your seats will be. This also refers to your air tickets and your accommodation. The city is not necessarily expensive, but it still charges First World prices, so make sure you start saving where you can so that you have more disposable income to splurge while you are on holiday in Berlin.
